Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge Migration Update
October 14, 2010

Fall is here! The weather remains warm, and we finally started to receive some precipitation. Waterfowl are moving onto the Refuge, but not in large numbers.  Northern pintails, gadwall, and American widgeon have been seen on the Refuge.  Canada geese flocks can be seen leaving the Refuge early morning and returning mid-morning.  There have been a few trumpeter swans sited, and we expect family groups to arrive soon.  There are many pheasants in the area, and it looks like there were several hatches this year.  There has even been an occasional prairie chicken spotted, so keep an eye out for a birding treat.

Hunters:  Please obtain a free Refuge hunting permit when you arrive and carry on your person while hunting.  A Refuge map with areas open to hunting is located on the back of the permit.  You are required to have a State license, and use non-toxic shot.  The Little White River Recreation Area (LWRRA) is available for camping, and you may hunt all species that are open to hunting in Bennett County.  Please be aware this only allowable on the LWRRA, and not the Refuge.

Hunting dates and hours:  The Refuge is open to upland game hunting 11 AM MT to sunset from October 16-22 and 9 AM MT to sunset from October 23 to January 2, 2011.  Please note that these dates are different than surrounding lands off the Refuge.  Muzzleloader deer seasons on the Refuge are October 20-26 and November 24-30, 2010.  This is a limited issue Refuge deer license; please contact SDGF&P to apply for this license.
