Wildlife and HabitatThe high density of wetlands and large tracts of grassland within the District attract numerous grassland and wetland nesting migratory birds, plus a wide variety of other wildlife species. In the central part of the District, breeding waterfowl densities often exceed 100 pairs per square mile. Grassland management on Waterfowl Production Areas is done mostly through cooperative grazing agreements, haying agreements or prescribed burning. The focus of management operations is keeping the grassland resources in good condition for ground nesting birds with emphasis on waterfowl.
