Kulm Wetland Management District - Kulm, North Dakota

Who We Are

Kulm Wetland Management District is located in south central North Dakota. The District currently manages 200 Waterfowl Production Areas and one Wildlife Development Area for a total of 45,683 acres.

Numerous acres of wetland and grassland easements are monitored by the District staff. Bone Hill, Dakota Lake and Maple River National Wildlife Refuges are also administered from the Kulm office.

The high density of wetlands and large tracts of grassland within the District attract numerous grassland and wetland nesting migratory birds. In the central part of the District, breeding waterfowl densities often exceed 100 pairs per square mile. Grassland management on Waterfowl Production Areas is done mostly through cooperative grazing agreements, haying agreements or prescribed burning. The focus of management operations is keeping the grassland resources in good condition for ground nesting birds with emphasis on waterfowl.

Waterfowl Production Areas are open to hunting, fishing and trapping. These areas also provide opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography and environmental education. Kulm Wetland Management District is a proud part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. In 2003, the National Wildlife Refuge System will reach its 100th birthday. Help us celebrate this milestone of wildlife conservation.
