August 29, 2006 - Field spared after vehicle ignites fire

While harvesting wheat, a farm vehicle ignited a small wildfire in freshly cut field on Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Crews from Klamath Basin's Division of Fire Management and the Tulelake Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene after a worker called 911 and reported the blaze. The workers were able to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher and hand tools. Quick action and the prevailing wind kept the fire from spreading into an adjacent field which had not yet been harvested.
