In preparation for the next phase of restoration, the Lighthouse Lamp Shop, Inc. was on hand this past week to install the necessary protection around the Kilauea Lighthouse's fragile lens. This included wrapping the lens in a layer of protective material. A wooden box was also built around the lens, with the help of the North Shore Lions Club, to provide it with an extra layer of protection. Over the next two years the Kilauea Lighthouse will be undergoing extensive restoration, in order that it may be fully restored by its 100th birthday on May 1, 2013. The next major phase of restoration is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, and will involve repairing the unique cast iron roof and lantern assembly.
