Nēnē Awareness Day - September 24. Free admission will be offered from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This annual event pays homage to Hawai‘i's state bird, listed as an endangered species. Once on the brink of extinction with only 30 nēnē left in the world, the beautiful State Bird of Hawai‘i now enjoys a growing population of approximately 2,000 nēnē on the islands. Help celebrate this local conservation success by showing your creative side as to why the endangered nēnē is special to you in this Art & Poetry Contest! Your art & poetry will be displayed on ‘Nēnē Awareness Day,’ at the Kīlauea Point Lighthouse at Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.
