1868 - Pribilof Islands protected as a reserve

President Ulysses S Grant first formally recognized the need to set aside federal land for the management of wildlife resources when he declared the Pribilof Islands in Alaska a reserve for the northern fur seal.

Managed by the Department of the Treasury, the Pribilof Islands reserve was the United States' first attempt to protect wildlife for its renewable and economic values.
