Polar Bears

Sport-hunted Trophies Taken in Canada

General Information
The import of sport-hunted polar bear trophies from Canada is regulated under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. As such, you must obtain a permit before you import your trophy. In addition, a CITES export permit is required from Canada . For more information on importing your trophy, please refer to the fact sheet, Importing Your Polar Bear Sport-hunted Trophy. In addition, due to a November 2003 change in the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Service is accepting applications for the import of trophies taken before February 19, 1997 . For more information about this change, please refer to the summary entitled “H.R. 2961 - Amendment of the Marine Mammal Protection Act”.

Application
To receive a permit authorizing you to import your sport-hunted trophy, you must submit an application (Form 3-200-45) to the Service. The Service must review your application to determine if you meet the issuance requirements under the polar bear regulations (50 CFR 18.30) and the general permit regulations (50 CFR part 13).

Polar Bear Populations
Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, for bears hunted after February 18, 1997, only trophies taken from certain populations within Canada may be imported. The Service has published a list of approved polar bear populations in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, as well as producing a map, to assist potential hunters. Please be aware that polar bears hunted after May 31, 2000, from the M’Clintock Channel population are not allowed to be imported into the United States (Federal Register Final Rule, October 5, 2001).
