Captive-bred Wildlife Registration

The purpose of the Endangered Species Act is to provide a means to conserve endangered and threatened species and their ecosystems. The captive-bred wildlife (CBW) registration was established to decrease Federal permit requirements for captive-born, exotic, endangered and threatened species for activities that will enhance the propagation or survival of the species. For more information on the CBW system, please refer to the fact sheet, Captive-bred Wildlife Registration under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Application
To register for a CBW, you must submit an application (Form 3-200-41) to the Service. When you apply, you will be asked to certify on the application that you have read and are familiar with the General Permit Procedures regulations (50 CFR part 13), which apply to all permits. A copy of excerpts from 50 CFR part 13 is included in the application package. In addition, you will be asked to certify that you have read and are familiar with the CBW regulations (50 CFR 17.21(g)). To facilitate the exchange of breeding stock, the FWS annually distributes a list of CBW registrants to all CBW holders. If you are applying as an individual, you should include a copy of the mailing list form with your application to indicate if you want your address to be included in the registrant list.

Annual Report
You must submit an annual report by March 31. This report is to include activities conducted with registered species and a year-end inventory of all registered species, for the previous year.

Contacts
You may want to contact your State Conservation Agency and USDA APHIS Animal Care to ensure that you meet their requirements.
