Nature Conservation Protocol with China

Signed in 1986, and renewed for 5 years in 1996, the Nature Conservation Protocol is administered on the American side by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (FWS) Division of International Conservation and coordinated with the Department of Foreign Affairs of the P.R.C. State Forestry Administration, and with the International Cooperation Department of the P.R.C. Ministry of Agriculture. Activities are funded largely through appropriations to FWS, and other participating federal agencies. Several U.S. non-governmental organizations also take part.

The latest meeting of the U.S.-P.R.C. Nature Conservation Protocol Joint Committee was held March 19-2003, in Washington, D.C. At that time, the two countries negotiated activities to be carried out during 2003-2005. The work plan, known as Annex 9 to the Protocol, includes 8 exchanges of American and Chinese specialists under the following topics: protected areas management; large lake fish habitat restoration; CITES implementation; wetlands restoration and conservation.
