Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative

The Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative (WHMSI) brings together government wildlife officials and representatives from non-governmental organizations and conventions across the Americas to engage in international dialogue and cooperation on wildlife conservation issues.  This initiative builds on the historic call by the leaders at the 2001 Summit of the Americas for advancing conservation of plants, animals, and ecosystems through “the development of a hemispheric strategy to support the conservation of migratory wildlife throughout the Americas.”

WHMSI has held two major conferences at which participants from nearly all the countries across the Hemisphere participated and identified priority needs for conserving migratory species.  The WHMSI participants continue to explore and refine these priorities while simultaneously seeking tools to address them.  For more information about WHMSI, please go to Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative.
