Obtaining an Official Idaho Species List for Proposed Federal Actions

Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act directs the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to consult with federal agencies on any proposed actions (direct or indirect) on federal lands that may potentially affect listed, proposed or candidate species or their habitat.

It is the responsibility of federal "action agencies" (or their designated representatives) to obtain an official table ("Species List") of listed, proposed and candidate species that may be present where the proposed activity is to occur. If the project potentially affects the species or its habitat, the federal agency is required to consult with the Service.

Federal Agency Assistance and Consultation
The Endangered Species Act provides a means for conserving species and the ecosystems they depend upon.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with federal agencies on proposed and ongoing projects to ensure compliance with the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws that conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats.

The ESA directs all federal agencies to participate in conservation. Specifically, section 7 (a)(1) of the Act charges federal agencies to aid in the conservation of listed species. Another Section of the Act, 7 (a)(2), requires the agencies, through consultation with the Service, to ensure that their activities are not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of listed species or adversely modify designated critical habitats.

The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Office actively works with federal agencies on proposed and ongoing projects to ensure that they are in compliance with ESA and other federal law.
