North American Wolverine
6-Month Extension for Final Wolverine Listing Decision
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will extend the deadline for our final decision on whether to list the wolverine under the Endangered Species Act. The Act allows for such an extension when there is substantial scientific disagreement regarding the sufficiency or accuracy of the available data relevant to the decision at issue. We will publish a Federal Register notice extending the deadline for the final listing decision in January 2014. The new deadline for a final rule or withdrawal of the proposal will be August 4, 2014.
USFWS has published a proposal to protect the North American wolverine as a threatened species under the ESA. The 90-day comment period will close May 6, 2013. Three information mettings/public hearings for formal oral testimony will be held in Boise (March 13th), Helena (March 19th), Denver (March 27th)
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is reopening the comment period for the proposed listing of the North American wolverine, as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Originally published in the Federal Register on February 4, 2013, the Service is also proposing a special rule tailoring prohibitions of the ESA should the wolverine listing be final. As a result of the great diversity of opinions during the original comment period, the Service now wants to expand gathering more public input and additional information from the scientific community. The reopened comment period will close on December 2, 2013
