Special Retirement for Firefighters and Law Enforcement Officers

Special legislation was enacted to provide a different retirement benefit to full-time firefighters and law enforcement officers. Under this program, a more generous method of computing the amount of annual annuity is used. This different calculation was created to make earlier retirement, with shorter service, economically possible. Today firefighters and law enforcement offices must retire at age 57 and with 20-years of covered Federal service. In order to pay for this more generous retirement benefit, covered employees contribute an extra ½ percent into their retirement system.

In order to retire at 57, all entrants into covered positions must not be older than 37 years at the time of their initial appointment into a covered position. In rare cases, DOI has special provision to waiver the maximum entry age.
