Rowan Gould receives the 2013 FAPAC Diversity Excellence Award

Dr. Rowan Gould, Deputy Director of Operations for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, was presented with the 2013 Diversity Excellence Award from the Federal Asian Pacific American Council.  The award presentation took place at the 28th Annual National Leadership Training Program at the Hilton Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Long Beach, CA on May 8, 2013 at 6:30 PM.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the promotion of equal opportunity and diversity in the federal and District of Columbia government work force.

“Dr.  Gould’s  personal  commitment  to  diversity,  and  role  as  a  diversity  champion,  has contributed to the success of the Service’s mission, and has inspired other federal agency leaders to look to the Service for guidance,” said Dr. Kin Wong, FAPAC President.  “The Asian American and Pacific Islander community of federal employees is pleased to recognize him with the 2013 FAPAC Diversity Excellence Award.”

Under his leadership, he has developed and institutionalized a five-year Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan as a tool for achieving an inclusive work force.  He has dedicated funding solely for diversity recruitment initiatives and staff, and has oversight of the Senior Executive Diversity Council which is tasked with providing recommendations to the Director on diversity initiatives, priorities, funding allocations, communications gaps or barriers, and on making inclusiveness an integral part of Service operations.

“The US Fish and Wildlife Service strives to be a model employer by building and maintaining a workforce that reflects the rich diversity of the Nation,” said Rowan Gould.  “For us, achieving an inclusive workforce is a persistent and collective effort by all employees at all levels of the Service for the benefit of the American public.”

The Service’s diversity and inclusion initiatives have garnered numerous awards including the
2013 Diversity Journal Diversity Leader Award, as well as the Department of the Interior’s “Diversity Partnership Award” and “Best Practices Award” for the agency’s diversity-friendly initiatives.

Additionally, the Service’s efforts for disabled veterans and disabled Americans have been recognized by the State of Virginia Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Collaborative's (MARC) Disability Workforce Consortium.
