John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region
Bird List
This list of approximately 280 species of birds that have been recorded on the Refuge and its immediate environs.  It includes some 85 species that nest here, as well as migratory birds travelling the Atlantic Flyway that use the Refuge as a resting and feeding stop.  The list was composed in accordance with the Sixth American Ornithologists Union Checklist, and lists birds by category and seasonal relative abundance. ****Please note that the list below is outdated. Volunteers are working on compiling information to update the information.****

Key: The 4 columns after each species lists its relative abundance for the 4 seasons of the year: spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Relative abundance is coded as follows:

  • a - abundant - a very numerous species.
  • c - common - likely to be seen or heard in suitable habitat.
  • u - uncommon - present, but not likely to be seen.
  • o - occasional - seen only a few times in a season.
  • r - rare- present only in certain years.
