The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is an ideal location for area educators, scout groups, and home school groups who want to incorporate the environment into their curriculum.
Field trips to the refuge are free and self-guided. Group leaders are able to utilize the refuge as an outdoor classroom for lessons aligned with the various academic standards in Environment & Ecology, Science & Technology, Civics & Government, Geography, History, Mathematics, and English Language Arts.
Educators are highly encouraged to attend a Pre-trip Orientation class. Pre-trips are scheduled on an as needed basis and are designed to provide guidance in creating your field trip experience at the refuge. Pre-trips are approved for professional development in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and topics covered include:
- Introduction and history of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the refuge.
- Tips on outdoor class management and lesson development.
- Suggestions on integrating the field trip experience with your curriculum and state educational standards.
Call Environmental Education Specialist Erika Scarborough for more information or to register for a pre-trip orientation at 215-365-3118 or email her at Erika_Scarborough@fws.gov.
