Drug Summary & History
AQUI-S INAD 10-541

Fisheries professionals have identified a critical need for a safe and effective anesthetic that allows for the immediate release (or stocking) of treated fish. Currently no such anesthetic is available. AQUI-S® (active ingredient, isoeugenol) is a synthetic compound that has been approved in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and other countries as a fish anesthetic for which no withdrawal period is required (i.e., a “zero-withdrawal” fish anesthetic). In the U.S., AQUI-S® has recently emerged as a candidate for approval as a “zero-withdrawal” anesthetic for use on a variety of coldwater, coolwater, and warmwater fishes. The primary goal of field studies conducted under INAD #10-541 is to generate data to help determine appropriate AQUI-S® treatment regimens (exposure concentration x exposure duration) for a variety of cultured and wildstock fishes held or living under a variety of environmental conditions. Under this INAD, AQUI-S® New Zealand, Ltd. (Lower Hutt, NZ, with a U.S. agent in San Luis Opisbo, CA), is the only authorized supplier of AQUI-S® to all Investigators. One treatment option is allowed (see below), and the withdrawal period is 21 d.

Treatment Option (anesthesia): Administer one static-bath treatment at an AQUI-S® concentration of 5 - 60 mg/L (active drug). Exposure duration will typically be 1 - 10 min but may extend to 60 min at the discretion of the Investigator.
