Summary & History |
| In addition to its already approved uses (click on Drug-use Guidance/Approved Drugs button for details), oxytetracycline (OTC) injectable therapy has commonly been used to control mortality in salmonids and other fishes (e.g., sturgeons, pikes, bass and sunfishes, and perches) diagnosed with a variety of bacterial diseases. The primary goal of field studies conducted under INAD #9027 is to generate data to help demonstrate the effectiveness of OTC as an “injectable” to control pre- or post-spawning mortality in broodstock, or to control mortality in various life stages of other important stocks of fish that are oftentimes present in limited numbers. Under this INAD, Pfizer, Inc. (Lee’s Summit, MO), is the sole supplier of OTC to all Investigators. The standard treatment dosage allowed by the Protocol is to administer one intraperitoneal (IP) injectable of the standard terrestrial dose of 20 mg (active drug)/kg of fish body weight. No withdrawal period is required for fish that are illegal for harvest or for dead fish that will be buried or rendered into nonedible products; otherwise, the withdrawal period is 30 d. |
