Drug-use
Guidance...
General Information
The following "Drug-use Guidance" pages contain a variety of
information, all of which should assist you in making sound
decisions as to what drugs may legally be used in the United
States and the conditions under which they may be used.
These pages do not include those yet to be approved drugs
for which the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service holds Investigational
New Animal Drug (INAD) exemptions (details regarding INAD
drugs can be found to the left of this screen under the heading "INAD INFORMATION").
The "Drug-use Guidance" pages do, however, include the following.
- FDA approved drugs,
- drugs which are categorized by FDA as being of "low
regulatory priority" (LRP drugs),
- substances (drugs)
not approved for use in aquatic species but generally recognized
as safe (GRAS) for other uses,
- drugs for which use
in aquaculture is "forbidden", and
- drugs for which
FDA has deferred a decision on their status.
The "Drug-use Guidance" pages also include direct links to
various guidance documents, at this time primarily from
FDA. Guidance documents are often intended to assist prospective
sponsors of drugs, animal health practitioners, animal
owners and caretakers, and other interested parties in
making informed decisions about the use of drugs and the
generation of information pertinent to applications for
new animal drug approvals.
The "Drug-use Guidance" pages reflect the opinions
and interpretations of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's
Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program, and with
the exception of the pages generated by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (accessed
via links from our website), they do not represent the
opinions or interpretations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's
Center for Veterinary Medicine. The definitive source of
information about drugs for aquatic animals is the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine.
The acronyms FDA and CVM are used interchangeably within
these pages. |
