Historical Background

In 2001, at the urging of U.S. pharmaceutical companies (and others), the National Coordinator for Aquaculture New Animal Drug Applications (Ms. Roz Schnick) sent out a questionnaire to Federal,State and Tribal natural resource agencies. The questionnaire or survey asked each agency to respond with their most recent detailed fish production data. As a result of the responses to the questionnaire, a database was compiled by Ms. Bonnie Johnson (AADAP), and was made publicly available via the internet.

The original database comprised fish production information from 43 states, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and several Native American tribes.

Current (2005) Database Background

In October 2006, AADAP initiated a revision of the Public Aquaculture Production Database. In coordination with the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies’ (AFWA) Drug Approval Working Group (a subcommittee of the AFWA’s Fisheries and Water Resources Policy Committee), AADAP sent a letter to all Federal, State and Tribal agencies responsible for fish production and aquatic resource management. The letter requested their assistance by providing to AADAP their most recent full-year fish production data (2005). Ms. Bonnie Johnson has now completed the data collection and compilation for this new data set.

The current database comprises fish production information from 50 states, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service and 19 Native American Tribes.
