INTRODUCTION: |
Back in October 2006 the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership, along with the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies’ (AFWA) Drug Approval Working Group (a subcommittee of the AFWA’s Fisheries and Water Resources Policy Committee), sent out an email asking all public sector (i.e., state, federal and tribal) aquatic resource agencies to help us in assembling a national database. Specifically, we were asking for each agency's 2005 fish production data. The primary purpose for the aforementioned "data call-in," and the establishment of the associated 2005 Database (as in the case of the 2001 Database) was to assist pharmaceutical companies interested in the aquaculture arena. Prior to the 2001 Database, pharmaceutical companies as well as others involved in collaborative drug approval efforts (including FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine; CVM) had little, if any, idea as to how many fish were being produced in this country by the public sector. Hence, this lack of fish production data, restricted their abilities to make crucial decisions, such as whether or not to invest in the R&D for a particular aquaculture drug or, in the case of CVM, how best to align their programs and regulatory authorities with the production needs of the aquaculture community. Secondarily, it is anticipated that the Database may also serve resource agencies by allowing for more efficient use of manpower and aquatic resources, e.g., sharing or trading of species, rather than every agency rearing all species that they need for their jurisdiction. We are delighted to say that response to our request was phenomenal; we received complete fish production data from all 50 State agencies, two Federal agencies and 19 Native American Tribal agencies. We have compiled all the data, and the resultant database is now available to the public. If you are reading this text, you have found your way to the database. The database is not truly searchable, nor are the raw data downloadable. However, we have made every effort to generate as many possible reports from the data as we could envision users needing. Each and every report (all 283 of them) is available as an Adobe "PDF" file for your downloading and use. We hope that you and your organization are able to find value and utility in the database. Finally, we would like to sincerely thank all of the agencies for all the help they provided to us. Their data packages have helped to make a difference. The 2005 Public Aquaculture Production Database will be instrumental in making new and much needed FDA-approved drugs legally available for use by the private and public-sector aquaculture communities in/on animals under their care. |
