Description Outcome: |
Culverts installed
in the 1970's on Squaw Creek are undersized for the creek's flow conditions
and too short for the present road dimensions. The poor design
of the culverts erode road and stream bed materials, creating
a "perched" culvert that is a barrier to fish migrations during
low flow periods. This
project replaced two (another in
2002), improperly
installed culverts with
properly designed and placed culverts. In addition, the side slopes of the roads were stabilized to minimize
erosion, and a monitoring program, involving
partners, has been developed. |

| Benefit: |
After the
third culvert is replaced, the project will open more than10 stream
miles for adult salmon to migrate to historical spawning grounds,
juveniles to out-migrate, and other resident fish to use for spawning,
rearing and growth. |
