Project Description

Poorly-designed fish ladders and culverts at the mouth of Chester Creek have been identified as major reasons for the decline of anadromous fish in the creek. This project will restore native salmon runs to Chester Creek by improving fish passage from saltwater at Westchester Lagoon. When completed the project will improve anadromous fish passage to 5 miles of spawning habitat in Chester Creek by replacing the existing fish ladder with a functioning one, replacing existing 300-ft long culverts with an open channel, relocating utilities and moving a railroad, restoring freshwater wetlands adjacent to Chester Creek and Westchester Lagoon and promoting conservation education via fish and wildlife viewing areas.

Project Status:

Engineering studies are nearly completed. Construction is scheduled for October 2002. This is a $3-5 million project, which will take several years for completion.

Partners: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska Railroad Corporation, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Tesoro Alaska Petroleum Company, and Anchorage Fueling and Service Company.
