Project Description and Status:

In 2001, after the NC Division of Marine Fisheries (Division) completed its Chowan River Watershed Spawning Area Survey, the USFWS negotiated with NC Department of Transportation and the Division's personnel on priority site selection for a culvert renovation project in the Chowan River Basin; the first upstream culvert on Brook's Creek, a tributary of the Wiccacon River which flows into the Chowan River.

In 2002, two elliptical-shaped aluminum corrugated culverts with wing walls will be purchased and installed at a designated site on State Route 1443. The Grant Agreement with NC Department of Transportation was completed and signatures are forthcoming for project implementation.

Benefits: This project will provide river herring, American shad, hickory shad, and American eel passage to a minimum of 8 miles of suitable spawning and nursery habitat.

Partners: North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Project Funding Pie Chart
