Project Description and Results:

The Ashland FRO contracted to Bruce Adamson Consulting to sponsor a workshop, titled "How to Build Fish Friendly Stream Crossings." The workshop, hosted by the Marquette Biological Station, was for resource professionals determined to remediate stream degradation and fish passage problems resulting from historic road crossing construction practices, and to insure that new road crossings are designed to be "fish friendly". Workshop participants visited demonstration sites on the Salmon Trout River where several problem road crossings exist. All of the sites visited provided examples of sedimentation and erosion problems resulting from poor construction practices and some also had perched culverts that blocked fish passage. Approximately 20 natural resource managers and landowners attended the workshop. The course was an outstanding opportunity to learn design and construction techniques to create fish and habitat friendly road crossings. Another workshop is being planned for 2002.
