Project Description:

This project falls under the first goal of the Upper Mississippi/Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem Team to protect, restore, and maintain a diversity of habitats to support native species, and also fulfills objectives of the "Fisheries, Wildlife, and Habitat Plan for Wisconsin."

Project Outcome and Benefits:

LaCrosse FRO, working with partners restored 1.7 miles of stream for nativebrook trout by constructing 30 instream structures. Structures consisted of weirs and in-bank LUNKERS, also known as 'Little Underwater Neighborhood Keepers Encompassing Rheotactic Salmonids.' The riparian habitat was also improved by riprap bank stabilization and native prairie grass seeding.

Partners: USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and private landowners. Project Funding Pie Chart
