| Project Description: |
Historically,
logging has altered the Graveyard Creek watershed by prelacing old
growth conifers and hardwoods with shorter-lived aspen, increasing
the beaver population. Because of beaver dams and log jams, Graveyard
Creek has become seriously braided, which has caused sediment to
cover spawning substrate throughout a section of the stream. The
Bad River Tribe is continuing to remove beaver dams to restore Graveyard
Creek into one channel. The Tribe will also install wing dams and other in-stream modifications
to create pools and begin planting native trees that were removed
during the logging era. The Tribe is managing the watershed to restore
coniferous and hardwood forests, which is expected to prevent a
reoccurrence of stream habitat problems. |

Beaver dam removal on Graveyard Creek. |
 |
|
Project Outcome: |
A five-mile section of habitat
has been affected by beaver dam activity. Once a single channel has
been established, these 5 miles will be restored to riverine habitat
conditions.
|
| Benefits: |
The increase in water flow
will scour the sediment and expose the spawning substrate for coaster brook trout. Placing wing dams and creating pools is will benefit
juvenile coasters by providing resting, feeding, and overwintering habitat.
