Project Description:

This large low water crossing presents an impediment to fish passage at all discharges. At low water, the large amount of debris coupled with the excessive stream gradient prohibits fish passage. At high water discharges, water velocity in the narrow portion of the crossing also prohibits fish passage. In addition, vehicular traffic continues to degrade the existing structure and downstream water quality.

Project Outcome: This project widened the breeched portion of the crossing to achieve a stream width of one hundred feet. Vehicular traffic has been restricted at the structure, however fish are able to pass through readily. Large debris has been removed and the stream channel was re-graded.
Benefits: This project facilitates the genetic exchange between fragmented populations of Ouachita shiner (species of concern) and leopard darter (federally and state threatened) by reconnecting two miles of aquatic habitat. It also enhances recreational fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass and spotted bass.
Partners: Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, and John Hancock Timber Industries Project Funding
