Project Description:   In the 1930s, an undersized 6' X 6' culvert was placed to pass the water of an 80-foot slough and upstream 1,000-acre wetland in Skobob Creek tributary to the Skokomish River. Subsequent in-filling of the slough channel further reduced water transport, and increased ground water levels in the wetland, changing it from a forested wetland to a palustrine system. This also reduced storage capacity for flood events and resulted in more severe flooding of the Skokomish River Valley.

Project Outcome:   This project will restore fish passage and improve fish habitat in Skobob Creek by replacing an impassable culvert with a 120 foot spanning bridge.

Benefits:   Replacing the culvert with a bridge will restore fish passage to over 1 mile of spawning and rearing area in Skobob Creek, and an additional 1000 acres of adjoining wetland rearing habitat. Additionally, replacing the culvert with a bridge will allow flood waters to pass without blocking or cutting off the road.
