Please join the National Park Service Fire Management Program and the Prescribed Fire Training Center in welcoming Miranda Stuart as the new Fire Operations Specialist for the Prescribed Fire Training Center. Prior to joining the National Park Service Miranda worked for the USFWS at Texas Midcoast Refuge Complex as their Fire Effects Monitor and GIS Specialist. Her duties for the USFWS Complex included developing their fire effects monitoring program, vegetation monitoring and modeling and participating as a member of the fire crew. She spent six years working at the Complex before her move to Florida to join the staff at the Prescribed Fire Training Center.
Miranda started her career with the Winema National Forest in Oregon in 1995 as a Wildlife Biologist and active participant in the fire program, she was with the USFS for five seasons. She served on the wildlife, timber and fire crews and also conducted fire ecology research for one season on the Siskyiou NF during this period. Miranda transitioned to Fire full time when she accepted a position in 2000 with the Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas as their Fire Effects Monitor. Over the last eight years she has worked closely with helping to develop the curriculum for the S-341 course and has been a lead instructor and co-instructor as well as actively teaching within the fire community for other S and Rx level courses.
Miranda’s experience also includes a B.S from Oregon State University in Biology specializing in Genetics in endangered species. While a student at Oregon State she conducted research on Monarch Butterflies with Dr. Andrew Brower from Oregon State University and the research is published in Conservation Biology and Biodiversity but the fire community pulled her in and she is pleased to find her career has moved in this direction. Miranda has been a member of the Southern Area Red Team for two years and is working on her Division Supervisor Qualifications as well as her ICT3 qualification. She will be a valuable addition to the NPS Wildland Fire Program and share her knowledge and experience with the Prescribed Fire Training Center as well as working with National Parks in the SE Region.
While still a NIFC employee, her duty station is at the Prescribed Fire Training Center in Tallahassee, FL. Miranda arrived in Tallahassee, January 4, 2009 and has been spending her time getting re-oriented to NPS ways, meeting with the Center’s cooperators and learning the program.
