Midwest Region, November 8, 2013
Print Friendly Version

On September 25, 2013, the final critical habitat rule was published in the Federal Register for the grotto sculpin (Cottus specus) (available at: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-09-25/pdf/2013-23182.pdf). All critical habitat proposed by the Service on September 27, 2012 (available at: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-09-27/pdf/2012-23742.pdf), however was excluded due to the strength of a Perry County Community Conservation Plan. Development of the plan was a concerted effort by citizens and private landowners in Perry County and was done in close coordination with the Service’s Columbia, Missouri Ecological Services Field Office. Fifty-six entities signed on to the plan and included private citizens, landowners, municipal and county governments, and industry of Perry County. All parties are committed to implementation of the plan and working closely with the Service, the Missouri Department of Conservation and other state entities to undertake conservation actions that will reduce threats and contribute to the eventual recovery of the species.
