Conservation Programs for Private Landowners

Our nation’s private landowners are critical to the success of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s Service’s mission to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. The Service has many tools and programs for conservation of fish, wildlife and plants on private lands.

Notice of Funding Availability

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Upper Columbia Fish and Wildlife Office is seeking information on current and future proposed fish and wildlife habitat restoration, education, and assessment projects in eastern Washington and northern Idaho.

Projects may consist of restoration, recovery, assessment, or research. Priority will, however, be placed on “on-the-ground” projects that restore or enhance fish and wildlife and/or their habitats, with emphasis placed on well-planned projects benefiting federally listed/candidate species and their habitats or improving listed species numbers. Additional emphasis will be placed on projects that achieve a published recovery goal.

To submit a project proposal for funding fill out the proposal form.

Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program

The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (Partners) is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s primary tool for delivering voluntary, on-the-ground, fish, wildlife and plant habitat restoration projects on private, Tribal and municipal lands. The program provides cost-share funding and technical assistance to landowners for habitat restoration projects. Habitat restoration projects are intended to benefit migratory birds, threatened and endangered species and other sensitive species.

Conservation Planning Tools

Conservation Agreements are tools for non-federal landowners wishing to work with the Service to conserve listed or at-risk species, consistent with existing land use practices and management. Participants in these agreements commit to actions on their property   that will reduce threats to species and enhance their conservation.

Agreements may include Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs), Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs), Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP), and Safe Harbor Agreements (SHAs). For more information, see the Habitat Conservation Planning Handbook.
