Savanna National Wildlife Refuge
Great Blue Heron Refuge Overview: Located in the Savannah River floodplain in Jasper County, South Carolina, and Effingham and Chatham Counties, Georgia, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge was established by Executive Order No. 4626 in 1927 by President Calvin Coolidge. More than 1,555 acres have been acquired for the 28,321 acre refuge through the use of Migratory Bird Conservation Funds, which include Federal Duck Stamp dollars.acres.

Wildlife and Habitat: Though a critical wintering and roosting area for a number of migratory waterfowl, the Savanna National Wildlife Refuge is particularly important for ring-necked ducks, green-winged teal, and blue-winged teal. Over 6,000 acres of rice fields are managed on the site to provide feed for migrating waterfowl, and the refuge’s bottomland hardwood forests provide important habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
Recreation Opportunities: The Savanna National Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of outdoor activities for the public. The refuge is open to hikers, cyclists, and birdwatchers, and in the fall and winter hunting is available for deer, feral hogs, squirrels, turkey, and waterfowl.
