WPA Overview: Waterfowl Production Areas preserve small natural wetlands and their associated uplands. Federal Duck Stamp revenues are the primary funding source for the purchase of these lands. WPAs, which average 223 acres in size, are managed by the staff of Wetland Management Districts (WMDs). There are over 26,000 WPAs in the U.S. located mostly in the prairie pothole regions of the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin. WPAs are crucial for migratory waterfowl, serving as the production areas for 23 percent of the waterfowl in the mountain prairie-Midwest region. Restored Prairie Pothole/USFWS Photo |
