Welcome to the Devils Lake Regional Fire Training Center! This newly constructed facility is located on Sullys Hill National Game Preserve and is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Devils Lake office. The goal of the Northern Plains Fire Training Center is to provide scientific and NWCG courses that will help participants by providing biological, natural resource, agriculture and fire management classes year after year.
There are two primary classrooms in the facility. The larger classroom is equipped to seat 45-50 people and has a complete multi-media theater style setup equipped with surround sound, laptop computer, internet access, and an erasable white board. The smaller classroom can accommodate 35-40 people and has a LCD projector with screen, laptop, slide projector, TV/VCR combo and a large erasable board.
Sullys Hill also has a remote third classroom that can accommodate 35-40 people. This classroom has an erasable white board and audio and visual equipment needed to administer a class.
Almost endless opportunities exist for fire training courses at the facility. Many of these courses can be complimented by numerous hands on training exercises on the refuge itself. Saw projects (S-212) can be completed to develop or improve participants saw qualifications. Simple or progressive hose lays (S-211) could be set up with floto-pumps, mini-strikers or Mark III’s to help students gain a better understanding of procedures and pump capabilities. Structural triage (S-215) tactics could be completed with the buildings that are at Sullys Hill. Ignition techniques and procedures (S-234) could also be completed on site or on nearby Waterfowl Production Areas.
The mix of habitats and high diversity of wildlife allow the full gamut of identification, biology and ecology course curriculums. The refuge could serve as an outdoor laboratory for such courses as range plant identification, wildlife management, ornithology, or wetland ecology. These habitats and accompanying high plant and animal diversity creates a unique educational opportunity that would meet the learning needs of today’s firefighters
There are also numerous leisure opportunities including hiking, auto racing, hunting and fishing or bird watching to participate in while at the facility. The Lake Region has all the amenities to make instructors or students stay enjoyable while attending courses at The Devils Lake Regional Fire Training Center.
