by
John Steiner
Be it enacted by the Senate and
House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled.
That, for the preservation and enhancement of highly significant wildlife
habitat in the area known as south San Francisco Bay in the State of California,
for the protection of migratory waterfowl and other wildlife, including species
known to be threatened with extinction, and to provide an opportunity for
wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study within the open space so preserved,
the Secretary of the Interior . . . is authorized and directed to establish
a national wildlife refuge to be known as the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife
Refuge . . . .
Don Edwards San Francisco Bay
National Wildlife Refuge, the nation's first urban national wildlife refuge,
is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary. Established by an act of Congress
in 1972, the Refuge manages habitat for wildlife, protects endangered species
and migratory birds, and runs an education program which serves as a model
for national wildlife refuges throughout the country.
