Fire Weather

Desert NWR RAWS Unit Near Twin Buttes

USFWS Photo

There are approximately 1,500 interagency Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) located throughout the United States, primarily in the Western states. Desert NWR has two such stations. These stations monitor the weather.

RAWS units collect, store, and forward data to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and the Weather Information Management System (WIMS) via Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES).

Managers use the data collected for a variety of purposes such as predicting fire behavior, rating fire danger, monitoring environmental conditions, and research applications.
