Abstract:

This data set indicates the nature of land ownership (relative to the Refuge System) within the Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge approved acquisition boundary. An approved acquisition boundary delineates an area that has been approved for inclusion in a National Wildlife Refuge. However, approval does not necessarily indicate that any inholdings (areas coded as "i" in the polygon "STATUS" item) that fall within the boundary will be acquired by USFWS.

Purpose:

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes.

Arc and polygon item values were rechecked by data-entry staff against the source material for omissions and correctness. The pat- item "ARC_ACRES" was populated using a numerical expression with the Arcedit "calculate" command.

Process_Description:

Appropriate lines from a previously existing coverage containing the Lacreek external ownership boundary were "put" to a copy of the ArcInfo coverage named "lckleg" (Lacreek NWR approved acquisition boundary). Arc and polygon items consistent with the land status project requirements were created in the resultant coverage. The tracts were then screen-digitized into the coverage from a DRG. The coverage was run through quality control procedures and reprojected to create this data set. Metadata detailing the creation of the coverage "lckleg" is also available on-line.

To view the document: download the zip file, extract the contents, and change the name of the file extension on extracted file from ".fws" to ".doc". The .doc file can be viewed using MS Word. Tables 1 and 2 contain the attribute information. For this digital land status data set, the code of "l" (indicating approved legislative boundary) has been changed to a code of "a" (indicating approved acquisition boundary) in the aat-item named "BOUNDARY". The parameters of the arc and polygon items named "NWRNAME" have been ammended to accomodate the full name of the refuge. A code of "999" in the pat- item named "TRACTNO" is not a tract number; rather it is a place holder that indicates an inholding within the approved acquisition boundary. The "ARC_ACRES" pat-item contains the acreage of each tract (polygon). The pat-item "ENCUMBRANCE" has been added by Region 6 GIS & Mapping Branch.
