National Wildlife Refuges are federal lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Data used to locate this boundary was obtained from the USFWS Realty and Resource Planning programs and the Refuge staff.

Purpose:

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of refuge boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes.

Supplemental_Information:

Data are available both in the UTM projection described herein, and in geographic coordinates.

Refuge boundary data were compiled for resource applications. It is inappropriate to use this data in legal situations, or other applications where spatial error cannot exceed the USGS 7.5' mapping standards. This data is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. An approved acquisition boundary delineates an area that has been approved for inclusion into a National Wildlife Refuge. However, approval does not necessarily indicate that the entire area inside this boundary has been (or ever will be) acquired by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In regard to the line work in this file: There will probably be areas within the approved acquisition boundary that will be under the jurisdiction, authority, and control of the Secretary of the Army, as per Public Law 102- 402, Section 2 (c) (1). These areas have not been delineated in the approved acquisition boundary. The Refuge has been granted a canal right-of-way that is external to the main body of the Refuge; the r-o-w is not being delineated in the approved acquisition boundary. RE: T. 2 S., R. 67 W., Section 33, NW1/4 SW1/4 - there appears to be a portion of land that is not a part of the South Adams County Water Treatment Plant; it has not been determined whether this land is included in the Refuge. Therefore, it is not being included in the approved acquisition boundary.

Refuge data were developed with ESRI's ArcInfo version 7.2.1 Patch 2 software on a PC running WINDOWS NT version 4.0 (Build 1381: Service Pack 6) operating system.

A copy of a pre-existing coverage from the GIS and Mapping Branch was used as a base from which to start; fuzzy tolerance was changed to .001, nodesnap tolerance was lowered, arc items were added, tics were deleted, necessary line edits were made; an ArcView shape file (furnished by the Refuge) was converted to an ArcInfo coverage and used as a background from which to digitize portions of the Refuge boundary; the original polygon label was deleted and a new label was added; arc and polygon items were populated; the coverage was rebuilt for network topology and run through quality control procedures.

An approved acquisition boundary as it applies to Region 6 and to the digital legislative boundary set forth in 97-01, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Lands Boundary Data Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is defined as an area that is approved for acquisition into a National Wildlife Refuge; it may also include lands that have been acquired by fee, lease, easement, agreement, and permit, etc.. See SOP under "Labeling Files and Geographic Features - Legislative Boundary" (in process 1) for information on arc and polygon items and item values. Polygon items in addition to those referenced in the SOP include: ARC_ACRES (replaces SOP ACREAGE item), REC_ACRES and METHOD (these two items are no longer considered applicable, and therefore are not populated; however, the items are being retained to maintain consistency with coverages created previously that contain these items). There is an aat-item named METHOD which contains a code for the method of arc creation - a code of Dig-DRG indicates the arc was digitized or digitized\constructed from the DRG; a code of Dig-cover indicates the arc was digitized from an ArcInfo coverage used as a backcover.
