Abstract:

National Wildlife Refuges are federal lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The primary source for boundary information is the USFWS Realty program (status maps, legal surveys) and county records (deeds and legal surveys).

Purpose:

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of refuge boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes.

Supplemental_Information:

Data are available both in the UTM projection described herein, and in geographic coordinates.

A refuge boundary defines an area that is managed as a refuge. See Service Lands Boundary Data SOP under "Labeling Files and Geographic Features - Ownership Status" (in process 1) for information on arc and polygon items and item values. Polygon items in addition to those referenced in the SOP include: ARC_ACRES (replaces SOP ACREAGE item), REC_ACRES (contains acreage on file in Realty division for the area inside the refuge boundary), and METHOD (contains a code for the method of creation of the polygon); the code 'Dig-DRG' means lines composing the polygon were created either by digitizing the refuge boundary feature directly from the DRG or by using the DRG as a spatial reference from which to create line work to depict the boundary as represented on the status book.
