Abstract:
This geo-dataset represents the land ownership status boundary of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge through the ending date given in the Time Period of Content.
Purpose:
The intended application of this data is to serve as a spatial reference of refuge boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping as a 24,000 scale, resource grade application. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes.

Paper maps from the USFWS were digitized on a GTCO AccuTab digitizing tablet using a GTCO 16 driver connected to ArcInfo 7.1.2. Once digitized, the data was transformed to the appropriate projection (UTM, Nad83, zone 16) and cleaned with a tolerance of 1 meter. For any arcs that didn't connect to form polygons, the coverage was edited on-screen using ArcEdit. Standard operating procedures were followed by using the zoom function to magnify basemaps to 1/5000 while digitizing. Each feature was visually corrected by comparison with the paper maps from the refuge. Once all sections were topologically correct, they were attributed and saved as Shapefiles. Upon completion, a printed version of the boundary was examined and approved by both the refuge manager and the USFWS Region 3 Division of Realty. This process was performed by the University of Minnesota in cooperation with the USFWS.
