Abstract:
Since its establishment by United states Congress in 1990, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge has been devoted to the reconstruction and restoration of tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitats native to central Iowa circa 1840. Plant93 is a vector file of the 8654 acre Refuge planting activities for the calendar year 1993. This data set is the result of on-site update digitizing by Refuge staff for the purpose of realty queries, staff presentations, management, and Refuge history. Eppl-7 version 2.1 software and a 24x36 Altek Datatab Lite Line digitizer were used in the update. The file was then exported as an ERDAS file and converted into PC ARC-INFO version 3.4.2 using the GRIDPOLY command. After conversion into PC ARC, the file was PROJECTED from UTM coordinates to GEOGRAPHIC. After this, the file was CLEANED and BUILT. It is now used by NLS in both PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2 and ARCVIEW 2.0.
Purpose:
To provide Refuge staff with graphic, tabular, and textual data on their prairie/savanna reconstruction and restoration efforts. To document the reconstruction process for future landscape-scale ecosystem recovery ventures.

Data set was converted from Eppl-7 file, which was converted from WRT (Wallace, Roberts and Todd Environmental Planners) Sun-UNIX ARC-INFO Owner file. Original file was estimated at 99.5% accurate. To update, sites that were assigned a unique attribute value were first reclassed and assigned a new attribute value in Eppl-7. They were then exported to PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2. as ERDAS data. GRIDPOLY was used to convert the data. PROJECT was then used to achieve geographic coordinates. CLEAN and BUILD were used to finish the file. It is hypothesized that no accuracy was lost in the PC ARC processes, although some accuracy may have been lost in conversions.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data set is consistent to all points, lines and polygons within the clipping universe. Planting site numbers were labeled with whole numbers in increments of one beginning with a number one higher than the last 1992 planting data set entry. No duplicate numbers exist. If a site was planted more than once, it retains its original site number. In areas that were seeded into a cover crop in preparation for CY 1993 planting, whole numbers labeling planting sites began at 100.2.

WRT maps were complied from WRT research teams who digitized information from various sources (including the SCS, Jasper County, the State of Iowa, and 1846 Federal Land Survey notes) into SUN-UNIX Arc-Info. These data were later given to NLS staff for use in the Refuge EIS/ Master Planning process. NLS planting data was collected from field note text and hard-copy map drawings. The data were digitized in Eppl-7 2.1 by Refuge staff using an Altek Datatab digitizing tablet and WRT tic, contour, vegetation and cadastral references. Some field checking was conducted by operations staff, however, no accuracy figure is known.
