Abstract:
Since its establishment by United States Congress in 1990, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge has been devoted to the reconstruction and restoration of tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitats native to central Iowa circa 1840. 1-3.epp is a raster file of the 8654 acre Refuge depicting individual parcels of land owners within the top 1/3 of NLS acquisition boundaries. This data set is the result of on-site update digitizing by Refuge staff for the purpose of realty queries, staff presentations, management, and Refuge history. Eppl-7 version 2.1 software and a 24x36 Altek Datatab Lite Line digitizer were used in the update.
Purpose:
To provide Refuge staff with graphic, tabular, and textual data on the procurement and management of land within NLS acquisition boundaries.

Data set updated from WRT (Wallace, Roberts and Todd Environmental Planners) parcels file. Original file was estimated at 99.5% accurate. To update, sites that were assigned a unique attribute value were simply reclassed and assigned a new attribute value. It is hypothesized that no accuracy should have been lost in this process. Note, however, that some accuracy may have been lost in the transition from Sun UNIX ARC INFO to raster format.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This raster file was created from a Sun UNIX ARC INFO file that was found to be logically consistent for all points, lines, chains, nodes, arcs, and polygons. PC ARC INFO was used to test the consistency of the original ARC file 199508. Visual examination of the raster data set showed no deviation from the test performed.

WRT maps were complied from WRT research teams who digitized information from various sources (including the SCS, Jasper County, the State of Iowa, and 1846 Federal Land Survey notes) into SUN-UNIX Arc-Info. These data were later given to NLS staff for use in the Refuge EIS/ Master Planning process. NLS realty data was collected from the regional agency office and Jasper County Assessors, Iowa. The data were updated through reclassification of specified areas in Eppl-7 2.1 by Refuge staff using an Altek Datatab digitizing tablet and WRT tic, contour, and cadastral references. Field checking was conducted.
