Abstract:
Since its establishment by United States Congress in 1990, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge has been devoted to the reconstruction and restoration of tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitats native to central Iowa circa 1840. Natveg is a vector file of the 8654 acre Refuge depicting native vegetation types within and surrounding NLS as determined by the 1992 master plan vegetation survey. This file was originally in Sun-UNIX format. It was converted to Pc ARC-INFO 3.4.2 through the GRIDPOLY command. The file was next PROJECTED into GEOGRAPHIC coordinates. Finally, it was CLEANED and BUILT. The data set is now used At NLS in PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2 and in ArcView 2.0.
Purpose:
To provide Refuge staff with graphic, tabular, and textual data on the procurement and management of land within NLS acquisition boundaries.

The file was then PROJECTED into GEOGRAPHIC coordinates. Finally, the data set was CLEANED and BUILT. It is now used by NLS in PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2 and ArcView 2.0. It is hypothesized that no accuracy should have been lost in this process. Note, however, that some accuracy may have been lost in the conversion.

WRT maps were complied from WRT research teams who digitized information from various sources (including the SCS, Jasper County, the State of Iowa, and 1846 Federal Land Survey notes) into SUN-UNIX Arc-Info. These data were later given to NLS staff for use in the Refuge EIS/ Master Planning process. NLS realty data was collected from the regional agency office and Jasper County assessors, Iowa. Field checking was conducted.
