Abstract:
Since its establishment by United States Congress in 1990, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge has been devoted to the reconstruction and restoration of tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitats native to central Iowa circa 1840. Clip_wc is a vector file of the entire Neal Smith watershed used for clipping, mosaicing, etc. This data set is the result of a conversion from ARC-INFO Sun Unix to PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2. After conversion, the file was PROJECTED from UTM coordinates to GEOGRAPHIC. After this, the data set was CLEANED and BUILT. It is used in both PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2 and ARCVIEW 2.0 at NLS.
Purpose:
To provide Refuge staff with graphic, tabular, and textual data on cadastral and management themes within NLS acquisition boundaries.

Data set was converted from original WRT (Wallace, Roberts and Todd Environmental Planners) ARC-INFO Sun Unix file. Original file was estimated at 99.5% accurate. GRIDPOLY was used to convert the file. PROJECT was then used to achieve GEOGRAPHIC coordinates. CLEAN AND BUILD was used to finish the file. It is hypothesized that no accuracy was lost in the PC ARC processes, however, some accuracy may have been lost in the conversion itself.

This vector file was converted from a Sun UNIX ARC INFO file found to be logically consistent for all points, lines, chains, nodes, arcs, and polygons. PC ARC INFO was used to test the consistency of the original ARC file 199508. Visual examination of the data set showed no deviation from the test performed.

WRT maps were complied from WRT research teams who digitized information from various sources (including the SCS, Jasper County, the State of Iowa, and 1846 Federal Land Survey notes) into SUN-UNIX Arc-Info. NLS realty data was collected from the regional agency office and Jasper County assessors, Iowa. Field checking was conducted. These data were later given to NLS staff for use in the Refuge EIS/ Master Planning process. NLS staff converted the data set to PC ARC-INFO 3.4.2.
