· Signs of hatching: sand sinking in, scratching sound in the
sand, ghost crab holes, and fox and dog fixation on nest.
· Inform EMC the week nest is due to hatch, so they can turn
off the streetlights (they need the # off the pole).
· Wear turtle shirt at ALL times on the beach when dealing with
nests!!
· At Laguna Key: Place black tarp behind the nest at day 55.
Narrow the tarp opening to help minimize predation.
· At all other locations: When predation or disorientation from
light is a significant problem, we will attempt to get permission to
install the tarp from the condo/home owners.
· Make sure you sign-up on the nest sitting sign up sheet. Nest
sitting will start at day 55 and continue until hatching. Only a moment
of your time is required to check the nest.
· Check nest at designated time (nest sitting sign-up sheet)
- check nest, if no signs of hatching go home. If signs of hatching
call your team leader. Team leader will then alert other volunteers.
DO NOT DIG INTO NESTS!
· Dig trench 9" deep and 12" wide all the way around
nest and to the water when signs of hatching are confirmed.
· If you are sure the hatchlings are going to emerge, ask nearby
condos to turn off pool lights (some will and some will not)
· As hatchlings come out of the sand, wear gloves and only touch
hatchlings when absolutely necessary.
· Crowd control is necessary - allow onlookers to participate
whenever possible (count the hatchlings as they pass, let turtle volunteer
know if a hatchling has escaped the trench, etc.). Remember this is
part of educating the public. Keep onlookers out of the water and do
not allow them to jump over the trench. Note: Parents often forget to
watch their own children!
· If you want to use a flashlight on the beach be sure to use
the red-film flashlight that has been provided, but do not use it to
direct hatchlings to the water.
· Do not dig into the nest! Seventy-two hours after the first
hatchling emerges, one of the FWS or State personnel will assist in
excavation.
· If nest does not hatch, one of the FWS or State personnel will
assist in digging into the nest at day 75 to count undeveloped or destroyed
eggs.
· Ghost crab traps are being developed for experimental use.
If crabs enter the trap, remove and release them a good distance down
the beach. DO NOT KILL GHOST CRABS!! They are also a part of our wildlife.
