On Friday, September 4, 2009, Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Mobile Manatees Sighting Network (MMSN) successfully tagged a manatee in Alabama waters, the first for the state. This first Alabama capture, a female manatee weighing over 1,000 pounds, has been dubbed "Bama".

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today released a final rule designating critical habitat for the Alabama sturgeon, a species listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The designation for the sturgeon includes one contiguous unit of river channel in portions of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers in the Mobile River Basin, Alabama.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today released the availability of its Five Year Status Review of 11 Mobile River Basin mussels, occurring in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners encourage landowners to grab a shovel, get their hands dirty, and help restore wildlife habitat in beautiful Baldwin County, Alabama. The Service hosted a dune restoration workshop in hurricane-ravaged Fort Morgan.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today released its Record of Decision (ROD) and issued modified Incidental Take Permits (ITPs) for the Beach Club West and Gulf Highlands condominium projects on the Fort Morgan Peninsula of Baldwin County, Alabama.
