The Chassahowitzka National
Wildlife Refuge Complex offers unique full-time internship opportunities
for students seeking a more formal experience working for the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service.
TYPES
OF INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE:
The Chassahowitzka NWR Complex
offers two categories of full-time internships:
Introduction
to Fish and Wildlife Service Operations:
This internship
provides students with an opportunity to work side-by-side with Service
professionals, performing a variety of operations such as natural resource
management, visitor services, environmental education, and maintenance.
This internship will provide working experience with the Service at
the GS-5 equivalent level.
Goal
or Project Specific:
This type of internship requires
that the intern candidate work on a specific goal or project that meets
the following criteria:
- Must be a requirement
for the student's course-curriculum and be coordinated in conjunction
with the college or university.
- Must benefit the Service
and/or the Chassahowitzka NWR Complex.
Students wishing to pursue
this internship must have their course advisor/counselor contact the
refuge management prior to entering into any internship agreement(s).
SCHEDULE
AND STIPEND:
Interns should plan to commit
to a specific period of time, no less than 30 days and no more than
120 days, unless approved by the Refuge Manager. Interns will work a
schedule of five consecutive eight-hour days for a total of 40 hours
per work week. A $10/work day stipend may be available on a biweekly
basis.
HOUSING:
The Refuge has two 30' trailers,
which are available for intern use. These trailers are complete with
gas stove, refrigerator, microwave oven, full-bath, queen size bed and
two bunk beds. Interns are responsible for cleaning the trailer and
getting “check out” before completion of their internship. Laundry facilities
are located on site in a separate shed.
