Region 2, assisted by Regions 5 and 6, presented a briefing to the Directorate on issues associated with CAFOs on March 18, 1999. In response to questions from the Service's Assistant Director-Refuges, regarding the impact of CAFO waste on National Wildlife Refuges (NWR), Region 2 and Region 6 have been working together to compile a list of NWRs currently expressing concern regarding upstream CAFOs. A national initiative to determine research and investigation needs related to CAFOs has begun. The initiative will support activities related to CAFO permit review and investigations within the Regions. In addition, a Geographic Information System national database will be developed for use in identifying problem areas or specific facilities that are impacting trust resources. In addition, the initiative will include support for Law Enforcement and the Solicitor's office.
